AbstractA method and apparatus for hardware-base edge handling in video post-processing. In one embodiment, the method includes the identification of at least one unstored input pixel required to compute an output pixel during output pixel computation. Once identified, a pixel value is generated for the at least one unstored input pixel according to a detected edge handling mode. The generation of the pixel value for the unstored input pixel is performed, in one embodiment, if a position of the unstored input pixel is outside a pixel frame boundary. For example, in one embodiment, for output pixel computation of a scaling operation, the frame boundaries include a left (top) edge and a right (bottom) edge for which input pixels required to compute output pixels at or near the frame boundaries do not exist. Other embodiments are described and claimed. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 10947852 filed on 09/22/2004US Classes:382/268Minimize discontinuities at boundaries of image blocks (i.e., reducing blocking effects or effects of wrap-around)Field of Search382/266, Edge or contour enhancement382/268, Minimize discontinuities at boundaries of image blocks (i.e., reducing blocking effects or effects of wrap-around)382/269, Minimize jaggedness in edges (e.g., anti-aliasing)382/295, To position or translate an image382/298, To change the scale or size of an image382/299, Raising or lowering the image resolution (e.g., subpixel accuracy)382/300, Interpolation382/305, Image storage or retrieval358/1.17, Page or frame memory358/1.2, Size, resolution, or scale control358/3.15, Edge adaptive345/472, Scaling345/530, COMPUTER GRAPHICS DISPLAY MEMORY SYSTEM345/559RegisterExaminersPrimary: Patel, KanjiAttorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References5237432, Image scaling apparatusIssued on: 08/17/1993 Inventor: Calarco, et al.5528704, Image resolution conversion using a plurality of image registrations Issued on: 06/18/1996 Inventor: Parker, et al.5650858, Pixel image edge-smoothing method and system Issued on: 07/22/1997 Inventor: Lund5689343, Area mapping employing reference clusters for high quality noninteger resolution conversion with enhancement Issued on: 11/18/1997 Inventor: Loce, et al.6005580, Method and apparatus for performing post-process antialiasing of polygon edges Issued on: 12/21/1999 Inventor: Donovan6144700, Method and apparatuses for removing blocking effect in a motion picture decoder Issued on: 11/07/2000 Inventor: Kim6549674, Image compression based on tiled wavelet-like transform using edge and non-edge filters Issued on: 04/15/2003 Inventor: Chui, et al.6664955Graphics system configured to interpolate pixel values Issued on: 12/16/2003 Inventor: Deering Foreign Patent References
