AbstractA method (700) and a base station controller (120) for operating in accordance with a wireless communication protocol are described herein. In a wireless communication system (100), the base station controller (120) may detect that the mobile station (160) is operable in accordance with the wireless communication protocol based on information associated with the mobile station. In response to detecting at least one of condition of the system (100) suggesting a potential for improved system performance, the base station controller (120) may transmit a handoff message from the first base station (140) to the mobile station (160). The handoff message may notify the mobile station (160) to operate in accordance with the wireless communication protocol. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 10210671 filed on 08/01/2002US Classes:370/331, Hand-off control370/466, Converting between protocols455/436HandoffField of Search370/328, Having a plurality of contiguous regions served by respective fixed stations370/329, Channel assignment370/331, Hand-off control370/332, Based upon a particular signal quality measurement370/333, Signal quality determined by bit error rate370/341, Channel assignment370/465, Adaptive370/466, Converting between protocols370/467, Conversion between signaling protocols455/436, Handoff455/437, Mobile assisted or initiated455/439, Handoff initiated by another source (e.g., target, user initiated, mobile switching center (MSC), or mobile telephone switching office (MTSO), etc.)455/442, Soft handoff455/443, Overlapping cells455/444Between macro and micro cellsExaminersPrimary: Patel, AjitAttorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References5574973, Method of registering/-reassigning a call in a dual mode communication networkIssued on: 11/12/1996 Inventor: Borth, et al.5737703, Multi-mode radio telephone which executes handover between different system Issued on: 04/07/1998 Inventor: Byrne5841985, Method and apparatus for supporting multiple protocols on a network Issued on: 11/24/1998 Inventor: Jie, et al.5999815, Method and apparatus for implementing diversity for a dual-mode communication unit Issued on: 12/07/1999 Inventor: TenBrook, et al.6298232Voice mail service notification between mobile systems Issued on: 10/02/2001 Inventor: Marin, et al.
