AbstractThe present invention provides a sorter preferably for an inserting system for sorting mailpieces into one of at least two sorting bins, the sorter having a transport device for conveying the mailpieces along a transport path. Each sorting bin includes a bending mechanism for bending the tail edge portion of a mailpiece and a final stacking roller for unbending the tail edge portion of the mailpiece such that the tail edge portion of the mailpiece is diverted into the sorting bin and away from the transport device without the occurrence of jamming of the mailpiece in the entry portion of the sorting bin. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 880549 filed on 06/23/1997US Classes:209/657, Deflector movable into and out of path of item209/540, Traveling item turned to predetermined position209/900, SORTING FLAT-TYPE MAIL271/178, Rotating packer271/181Packing sheets on-edge into receiverField of Search209/540, Traveling item turned to predetermined position209/541, Plural orienting means209/542, Reciprocable or pivotable orienting means209/545, Driven orienting means209/656, Movement of items along different paths controlled by passive deflector209/657, Deflector movable into and out of path of item209/584, On mail209/900, SORTING FLAT-TYPE MAIL271/177, Means to push sheets out of edgewise into broadside movement (e.g., packer)271/178, Rotating packer271/181, Packing sheets on-edge into receiver271/184, Means to change orientation or direction of sheets during delivery271/185Orientation-changing meansExaminersPrimary: Nguyen, Tan T.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References4718660, Anti-jamming means for a pocket of a mail sort machineIssued on: 01/12/1988 Inventor: Daboub4903956, Sheet stacking apparatus having positive control system for trailing sheet ends Issued on: 02/27/1990 Inventor: Stephens, et al.5064185, Method and apparatus for feeding and stacking articles Issued on: 11/12/1991 Inventor: Ricciardi5226547Mail transport assembly for mail sorting system Issued on: 07/13/1993 Inventor: Malatesta Foreign Patent References
