3M employee and church chorister Art Fry needed something to temporarily mark pages in his hymnal. After initially discouraging consumer response, Post-it Notes became a hit in 1979.

AbstractA lighter for tobacco products suppresses the urge to smoke by operant conditioning. It delivers a shock to the user's hand when the lighter is extinguished. This generally happens when the first puffs of smoke are being inhaled. Inhalation of the smoke gives a positive reinforcement of the habit because of the pharmacologic effects of the smoke. The shock provides a negative or suppressive action at the same time. The anticipation of the shock will negate the anticipation of the relief the drugs in the smoke provide. In an alternative embodiment, the shock is applied at; the time of activation of the lighter. In yet another embodiment of the invention a negative stimulus is provided by a pin that pricks the user at the time of activation of the lighter. | InventorApplicationNo. 010531 filed on 01/22/1998US Classes:607/58Electrical stimulation for aversion and substance abuse therapyField of Search431/129, BURNER HEAD COVER OPERATIVELY INTERRELATED WITH IGNITER431/130, Interconnected with valve in fuel feed passage431/131, By movably mounted burner nozzle431/144, BURNER CAP, COVER OR EXTINGUISHER431/145, Fluid431/157, MEANS AT CHAMBER OUTLET ESTABLISHING COMBUSTION PRESSURE DISTINCT FROM AMBIENT607/58Electrical stimulation for aversion and substance abuse therapyExaminersPrimary: Getzow, Scott M.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References3885576, 3886953, 3889163, 3963033, Electronic smoking inhibiting deviceIssued on: 06/15/1976 Inventor: Pope4246913, Apparatus for reducing the desire to smoke Issued on: 01/27/1981 Inventor: Ogden , et al.5501697Treatment device to aid in long-term cessation of smoking Issued on: 03/26/1996 Inventor: Fisher International ClassA61N 001/20 |
