...that Thomas Edison's patent application on his phonograph was approved by the Patent Office in just seven weeks? In contrast, it took Gordon Gould, the inventor of the laser, 30 years to obtain his patent -- finally awarded in 1988!

AbstractA communication and position determining device for use in an underwater communication and position determining system wherein the device transmits a sequence of one or more data words, wherein each data word includes a plurality of data bits transmitted in parallel as a corresponding number of concurrently transmitted signals, each of which occupies a different frequency band. The signals have waveforms selected from a pair of fade resistant waveforms that can be discriminated from one another, to represent binary data and the frequency bands are separated from one another by guard bands having widths sufficient to prevent intersymbol interference between the signals representing the data bits of a data word due, for example, to doppler and phase/frequency shifting, and successive data words are separated sequentially in time by intervals having a duration sufficient to prevent intersymbol interference between the signals of successive data words due to multipath reverberation. A single one of the signals of a data word is used for position determination wherein two devices each determine the bearing to one another from the bearing of the signals received from the other and a round trip propagation time determined from the time delay in transmitting an interrogation data word, a first response data word and a second response data word. Various alternative implementations of the invention are described. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 842602 filed on 04/16/1997US Classes:367/134TelemeteringField of Search367/134, Telemetering367/6, With plurality of transponders367/100, With correlation or matched filtering367/101, Frequency modulation367/102Linear modulation (e.g., sawtooth)ExaminersPrimary: Pihulic, Daniel T.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References3587038, 3860900, 3944967, Updated diver navigation deviceIssued on: 03/16/1976 Inventor: Acks , et al.4176338, High resolution acoustic navigation system Issued on: 11/27/1979 Inventor: Spindel , et al.4604733, Apparatus for determining range and bearing Issued on: 08/05/1986 Inventor: Brown , et al.4703462, Virtually steerable parametric acoustic array Issued on: 10/27/1987 Inventor: Woodsum5008860, Position and velocity measuring system Issued on: 04/16/1991 Inventor: Riley, et al.5018114, Adjustable frequency diversity acoustic communications system Issued on: 05/21/1991 Inventor: Mackelburg, et al.5077703, Underwater guidance system Issued on: 12/31/1991 Inventor: Strauss5185725, Diver locator system Issued on: 02/09/1993 Inventor: Kent, et al.5212490, Echo ranging system for detecting velocity and range of targets using composite doppler invariant-like transmissions with suppression of false targets Issued on: 05/18/1993 Inventor: Nelson, et al.5235558, Choke point bistatic sonar Issued on: 08/10/1993 Inventor: Woodsum, et al.5237541, Platform carried bistatic sonar Issued on: 08/17/1993 Inventor: Woodsum5305286, Bistatic/monostatic sonar fence Issued on: 04/19/1994 Inventor: Woodsum, et al.5469403, Digital sonar system Issued on: 11/21/1995 Inventor: Young, et al.5559757Spatial diversity processing for underwater acoustic telemetry Issued on: 09/24/1996 Inventor: Catipovic, et al.
