A system and method for indexing a multimedia stream to provide information regarding the content of the stream is disclosed. The present invention brings a new technology of representing, creating, and using additional information for the video stream, called video index, making possible the content-based retrieval to ease the video services. The present invention defines a portable and extensible multimedia file format for storing the media index including the video index, the media index file frame (MIFF), and provides a complete access toolkit for MIFF.
