AbstractMethod and system for increasing the effective resolution at which a lower resolution input pixel image is printed on a higher resolution dot matrix printer such an ink-jet or laser printer are described. Illustratively, a 300-dpi by 300-dpi input pixel image is prepared at the printer for printing at 600-dpi by 600-dpi, with otherwise jagged edges appropriately smoothed to produce high print quality. Each pixel and its predefined neighboring pixels in the input image are compared to stored image templates and when a match is found, the corresponding quad pixel, or super-pixel, to be output is altered from a mere replication of the input pixel, thereby to eliminate jagged edges. Memory space in the printer is reduced by storing templates that represent only a fraction of the problem patterns, the input pixel image being reoriented between comparisons in order to account for all possible cases. If it is determined that there are gray-scaled pixels within the neighborhood surrounding and including a given pixel of the input pixel image, the corresponding super-pixel produced at the output for printing preserves the gray-scale of the original. | InventorApplicationNo. 426460 filed on 04/17/1995US Classes:358/3.15, Edge adaptive347/5, Controller358/3.07, Rescreening (e.g., converting spatial resolution)382/254IMAGE ENHANCEMENT OR RESTORATIONField of Search358/443, Specific signal processing circuitry358/447, Signal enhancing358/448, Image processing358/461, Shade correction382/209, Template matching (e.g., specific devices that determine the best match)382/216, At multiple image orientations or positions382/254, IMAGE ENHANCEMENT OR RESTORATION382/299Raising or lowering the image resolution (e.g., subpixel accuracy)ExaminersPrimary: Wong, Peter S.Assistant: Frahm, Eric US Patent References4129860, Apparatus for forming a character by a matrix pattern of picture elementsIssued on: 12/12/1978 Inventor: Yonezawa , et al.4437122, Low resolution raster images Issued on: 03/13/1984 Inventor: Walsh , et al.4847641, Piece-wise print image enhancement for dot matrix printers Issued on: 07/11/1989 Inventor: Tung5005139, Piece-wise print image enhancement for dot matrix printers Issued on: 04/02/1991 Inventor: Tung5050000, Error diffusion of subcells in digital halftoning Issued on: 09/17/1991 Inventor: Ng, ;, , , --> Ng5123082, Image information recorder having a resolution density transformation device Issued on: 06/16/1992 Inventor: Shimada5222159, Image processing method and apparatus for extracting a portion of image data Issued on: 06/22/1993 Inventor: Kawamura, et al.5231519, Image processor which converts image with poor resolution into image with improved resolution Issued on: 07/27/1993 Inventor: Koike5231677, Image processing method and apparatus Issued on: 07/27/1993 Inventor: Mita, et al.5258854, Converting between write-white, write-black and neutral bitmaps Issued on: 11/02/1993 Inventor: Eschbach5293254, Method for maintaining bit density while converting images in scale or resolution Issued on: 03/08/1994 Inventor: Eschbach5301037Resolution conversion with simulated multi-bit gray Issued on: 04/05/1994 Inventor: Kang, et al.
