Abstract

A novel dye and photographic element comprising the dye are detailed. The dye is especially useful as an antihalation dye in a photographic element. A particularly preferred embodiment is provided in a photographic element comprising an absorbing amount of the dye: ##STR1## wherein X1, X2 independently represents --CR8 R9 --, --S--, --Se--, --NR10 --, --CH=CH-- or --O--;R1 and R2 independently represent alkyl of 1 to 10 carbons or substituted alkyl of 1 to 10 carbons;R3 represents a ring chosen from the set consisting of aromatic ring of 6 or 10 carbons, substituted aromatic ring of 6 or 10 carbons, a heterocyclic ring and a substituted heterocyclic ring;R4, R5, R6 and R7 independently represent hydrogen, alkyl of 1-10 carbons, substituted alkyl of 1-10 carbons;R8, R9 independently represent alkyl of 1-10 carbons, substituted alkyl of 1-10 carbons, aromatic ring of 6 or 10 carbons, substituted aromatic ring of 6 or 10 carbons;R10 represents an alkyl of 1-10 carbons, substituted alkyl of 1-10 carbons, aromatic ring of 6 or 10 carbons, substituted aromatic ring of 6 or 10 carbons;Q represents a counterion; andn is an integer chosen from 2 and 3.
