AbstractFreeze-thaw stable latex binders and latex paint compositions are prepared without the use of volatile freeze-thaw additives. The latex binder contains a polymer which is the emulsion polymerization product of a polymerizable polyethylene glycol (PPEG) monomer, wherein the molecular weight of the ethylene oxide moiety in the PPEG monomer is from about 175 to 1,100, at least one acrylic monomer and, optionally, one or more styrenic, ionic or wet adhesion monomers. Methods for preparing the freeze-thaw stable latex compositions are also disclosed. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 434108 filed on 05/03/1995US Classes:524/558, Acid or ester contains an oxygen atom which is other than part of a free carboxyl group or carboxylic acid ester group524/458, Polymerizing in the presence of water and in the presence of a solid polymer derived from ethylenic reactants only524/560, From ester derived from at least one unsaturated carboxylic acid and a saturated alcohol, e.g., methyl methacrylate, etc.524/833, Two or more carboxylic acids or derivatives526/320Ether or hydroxy containingField of Search526/318.41, Monomer contains chalcogen other than in C(=O)-O- chalcogen in any monomer)526/318.42, Hydroxyl group526/320, Ether or hydroxy containing524/558, Acid or ester contains an oxygen atom which is other than part of a free carboxyl group or carboxylic acid ester group524/833, Two or more carboxylic acids or derivatives524/458, Polymerizing in the presence of water and in the presence of a solid polymer derived from ethylenic reactants only524/460Solid polymer utilized is derived from an unsaturated carboxylic acid or saltExaminersPrimary: Yoon, Tae H.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References3896161, 4075411, Vinyl-polymerizable surfactive monomersIssued on: 02/21/1978 Inventor: Dickstein4077926, Pressure sensitive adhesive containing polymerized alkoxyalkyl ester of unsaturated carboxylic acid Issued on: 03/07/1978 Inventor: Sanderson , et al.4268641, Acrylic acid-acrylate copolymer thickening agents Issued on: 05/19/1981 Inventor: Koenig , et al.4322328, Manufacture of aqueous polymer dispersions and coating compositions derived from them Issued on: 03/30/1982 Inventor: Graetz , et al.4668730, Colloid stabilized latex adhesives Issued on: 05/26/1987 Inventor: Iovine , et al.5124393, Latex paints Issued on: 06/23/1992 Inventor: Ingle, et al.5134196, Polymer mixture comprising polyphenylene ether and polyamide Issued on: 07/28/1992 Inventor: van der Meer5157071, Paints and polymers for use therein Issued on: 10/20/1992 Inventor: Ingle5206286, Aqueous emulsion polymers prepared with crosslinkable non-ionic surfactants Issued on: 04/27/1993 Inventor: Swarup, et al.5208285, Vinyl acetate polymer with wet adhesion Issued on: 05/04/1993 Inventor: Boyce, et al.5212225, Binder synthesis process Issued on: 05/18/1993 Inventor: Ingle5219917, Latex-paints Issued on: 06/15/1993 Inventor: Ingle, et al.5227423Paints and binders for use therein Issued on: 07/13/1993 Inventor: Ingle Foreign Patent References
