AbstractA drive system comprises a pair of racks provided in a first direction, a pair of travellers, each of which is capable of moving in the first direction alongside each rack, a connecting member provided in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, each end of the connecting member is fixed to each traveller, a pair of pinions, each of which engages with each rack and rolls thereon in the first direction, the pinions coaxially connected by a shaft, and a first motor for driving at least one of the travellers in the first direction, wherein the first motor is not mounted on the travellers and the connecting member. With this structure, the movable parts of the drive system are lightened so that high speed operation is made possible.
