AbstractA noncontact laser microsurgical apparatus and method for marking a cornea of a patient's or donor's eye in transplanting surgery or keratoplasty, and in incising or excising the corneal tissue in keratotomy, and for tissue welding and for thermokeratoplasty. The noncontact laser microsurgical apparatus comprises a laser source and a projection optical system for converting laser beams emitted from the laser source into coaxially distributed beam spots on the cornea. The apparatus further includes a multiple-facet prismatic axicon lens system movably mounted for varying the distribution of the beam spots on the cornea. In a further embodiment of the method of the present invention, an adjustable mask pattern is inserted in the optical path of the laser source to selectively block certain portions of the laser beams to thereby impinge only selected areas of the cornea. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 788513 filed on 11/06/1991US Classes:606/5, Recurving or reshaping of the eye606/2, Light application606/4, Ophthalmic606/13, Applicators606/17With beam shaping or redirecting (e.g., lens)Field of Search606/11, Beam energy control or monitoring606/13, Applicators606/18, Mirror606/7, Angioplasty606/2, Light application606/14, Placed in body606/17, With beam shaping or redirecting (e.g., lens)606/4, Ophthalmic606/10, Systems606/3, With particular wavelength606/9, Dermatological606/16, With optical fiber606/15, With optical fiber606/8, Anastomosis606/2.5, Lithotripsy606/6, Cataracts or glaucoma606/19, Articulated arm606/12, Condition responsive606/5Recurving or reshaping of the eyeExaminersPrimary: Shay, David M.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References4729372, Apparatus for performing ophthalmic laser surgeryIssued on: 03/08/1988 Inventor: L'Esperance, Jr.4887592, Cornea laser-cutting apparatus Issued on: 12/19/1989 Inventor: Loertscher5152759Noncontact laser microsurgical apparatus Issued on: 10/06/1992 Inventor: Parel, et al.
