The host computer generates image data to be recorded as an image. The recording apparatus includes a recording head, an image data generator, an error detector, and a selector. The error detector checks the condition of the recording apparatus to detect any errors. The selector switches between an on-line mode and an off-line mode of the recording system. In the on-line mode, the recording head is capable of recording the image on the recording medium in response to the image data supplied from the host computer. In the off-line mode, the recording means is capable of recording the predetermined image on the recording medium in response to the predetermined image data supplied from the predetermined image data generator.
