AbstractAn apparatus and method for analyzing the cell objects of a cell sample for the diagnosis and treatment of actual or suspected cancer is disclosed. An image of the cell sample is first digitized and morphological attributes, including area and DNA mass of the cell objects are automatically measured from the digitized image. The measured attributes are compared to ranges of attribute values which are preestablished to select particular cell objects having value in cancer analysis. After the selection of cell objects, the image is displayed to an operator and indicia of selection is displayed with each selected cell object. The operator then reviews the automatically selected cell objects, with the benefit of the measured cell object attribute values and accepts or changes the automatic selection of cell objects. In a preferred embodiment, each selected cell object is assigned to one of six classes and the indicia of selection consists of indicia of the class into which the associated cell object has been placed. The measured DNA mass of identified cell object fragments in tissue section samples may also be increased to represent the DNA mass of the whole cell object from which the fragment was sectioned. | InventorAssigneeApplicationNo. 595117 filed on 10/10/1990US Classes:702/19, Biological or biochemical356/39, BLOOD ANALYSIS382/133Cell analysis, classification, or countingField of Search436/10, Particle count or volume standard or control (e.g., platelet count standards, etc.)436/63, BIOLOGICAL CELLULAR MATERIAL TESTED356/39BLOOD ANALYSISExaminersPrimary: Teska, Kevin J.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References3833796, 4097845, Method of and an apparatus for automatic classification of red blood cellsIssued on: 06/27/1978 Inventor: Bacus4125828, Method and apparatus for automated classification and analysis of cells Issued on: 11/14/1978 Inventor: Resnick , et al.4199748, Automated method and apparatus for classification of cells with application to the diagnosis of anemia Issued on: 04/22/1980 Inventor: Bacus4404683, Blood cell identification and classification system Issued on: 09/13/1983 Inventor: Kobayashi , et al.4523278, Method of automatic detection of cells and determination of cell features from cytological smear preparations Issued on: 06/11/1985 Inventor: Reinhardt , et al.4656594, Operator-interactive automated chromosome analysis system producing a karyotype Issued on: 04/07/1987 Inventor: Ledley4661913, Apparatus and method for the detection and classification of articles using flow cytometry techniques Issued on: 04/28/1987 Inventor: Wu , et al.4741043, Method of and an apparatus for image analyses of biological specimens Issued on: 04/26/1988 Inventor: Bacus4833629, Apparatus for categorizing and accumulating events Issued on: 05/23/1989 Inventor: Moore4987539, Apparatus and method for multidimensional characterization of objects in real time Issued on: 01/22/1991 Inventor: Moore, et al.5018209, Analysis method and apparatus for biological specimens Issued on: 05/21/1991 Inventor: Bacus5023785Hematology - diagnosis apparatus employing expert system technology Issued on: 06/11/1991 Inventor: Adrion, et al.
