AbstractA process for the repair of single-crystal drive blades, such as turbine blades, in which a sound portion of the blade is inserted into an open bottom of a casting mold in communication with a casting cavity in the mold adopted to the shape of the blade. The molten metal is then cast into the mold to unite with the sound portion and an epitaxial single-crystal solidification of the melt is produced on the sound portion to form the entire blade. A part of the sound portion has an outer surface layer thereof removed to expose a core region which is constituted of substantially pure single crystal material prior to casting. The sound part is secured in a holder which is coupled to the casting mold for only a matter of seconds before the molten metal is cast into the mold. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 806877 filed on 12/12/1991US Classes:29/889.1, Repairing or disassembling29/402.07, And by a metallurgical operation, e.g., welding, diffusion bonding, casting29/402.18, By applying fluent material, e.g., coating, casting164/103PreheatingField of Search29/889.1, Repairing or disassembling29/402.18, By applying fluent material, e.g., coating, casting29/402.13, Metallurgically attaching preform29/402.04, Including reconditioning of part29/402.07, And by a metallurgical operation, e.g., welding, diffusion bonding, casting29/402.01, Repairing164/100, Including preconditioning preform164/103, Preheating164/105, Of preform in mold164/254, Means applying vacuum or suction directly to molten casting material164/258Including melting chamber receptacleExaminersPrimary: Cuda, IreneAttorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References4333630, Mold bottom and stool protector constructionIssued on: 06/08/1982 Inventor: Strange4449714, Turbine engine seal and method for repair thereof Issued on: 05/22/1984 Inventor: Meier4589175, Method for restoring a face on the shroud of a rotor blade Issued on: 05/20/1986 Inventor: Arrigoni4940566, Alloy and methods of use thereof Issued on: 07/10/1990 Inventor: Wood, et al.4982066, Method of rehabilitating propeller hub bodies Issued on: 01/01/1991 Inventor: Waring5048183, Method of making and repairing turbine blades Issued on: 09/17/1991 Inventor: Cang, et al.5086968, Weld repairable combustor Issued on: 02/11/1992 Inventor: Fawley, et al.5092942, Method of repairing or modifying turbine blades Issued on: 03/03/1992 Inventor: Fraser, et al.5109606Integrally bladed rotor fabrication or repair Issued on: 05/05/1992 Inventor: DeMichael, et al.
