AbstractA gas permeable membrane divides a reactor vessel into a liquid compartment and a gas compartment. A biofilm is grown on the gas permeable membrane on the liquid side of the membrane. Teh gas permeable membrane is supported by the structure of the membrane itself. The biofilm is chosen from bacteria to degrade cetain pollutants by means of anaerobic fermentation, aerobic heterotrophic oxidation, dehalogenation, and hydrocarbon oxidation. This is accomplished by means of oxygen and alternate gases (i.e., methane) through the gas permeable membrane to certain bacteria growing on the liquid side of the gas permeable membrane. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 655206 filed on 02/11/1991US Classes:210/610, Including adding ancillary growth medium for microorganism210/150, WITH GAS-LIQUID SURFACE CONTACT MEANS210/615, Utilizing contact surfaces supporting microorganism (e.g., trickling filter, etc.)210/630, And anaerobic treatment210/909Aromatic compound (e.g., PCB, phenol, etc.)Field of Search210/615, Utilizing contact surfaces supporting microorganism (e.g., trickling filter, etc.)210/610, Including adding ancillary growth medium for microorganism210/611, For or with specific microorganism210/605, Anaerobically, with subsequently aerobically treating liquid210/620, Aerobic treatment210/629, And internally circulating the liquid210/630, And anaerobic treatment210/150, WITH GAS-LIQUID SURFACE CONTACT MEANS210/151, With separator210/908, Organic210/909Aromatic compound (e.g., PCB, phenol, etc.)ExaminersPrimary: Wyse, Thomas G.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References4181604, Process and apparatus for waste water treatmentIssued on: 01/01/1980 Inventor: Onishi , et al.4416993, Apparatus with semi-permeable membrane, and method for cultivating micro-organisms Issued on: 11/22/1983 Inventor: McKeown4746435, Biochemical process for purifying contaminated water Issued on: 05/24/1988 Inventor: Onishi , et al.5057221Aerobic biological dehalogenation reactor Issued on: 10/15/1991 Inventor: Bryant, et al.
