"The abolishment of pain in surgery is a chimera. It is absurd to go on seeking it...knife and pain are two words in surgery that must forever be associated in the consciousness of the patient."

AbstractA method and apparatus for performing personal identification and/or verification at perdetermined stations or checkpoints is provided. Each person to be identified has a unit such as a card, badge or other token or device which stores a predetermined coded value, at least a predetermined portion of which is changed at selected time intervals in accordance with an algorithm, the algorithm being such that the value of the predetermined portion of the stored coded value at any given time is nonpredictable. The unit has a triggering signal generator, the unit being responsive to the triggering signal to present an indication of the current stored coded value to the station, the station responding to the predetermined coded value for identifying the person. Triggering may be in response to detection of a predetermined beacon from the station, in response to a user keypad input or may be periodically generated. Security may be enhanced by the person inputting a unique PIN at the unit which PIN is utilized in generating the nonpredictable codes. The PIN input may also be used for triggering. Verification may be achieved by including a public code as part of the code which is presented from the unit which public code is not changed. | InventorAssigneeApplicationNo. 597784 filed on 10/19/1990US Classes:380/270, Wireless communication340/5.54, Password340/10.42, Identification only713/184PIN/password generator deviceField of Search380/28PARTICULAR ALGORITHMIC FUNCTION ENCODINGExaminersPrimary: Tarcza, Thomas H.Assistant: Cain, David Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References4509093, Electronic locking device having key and lock parts interacting via electrical pulsesIssued on: 04/02/1985 Inventor: Stellberger4578530, End-to-end encryption system and method of operation Issued on: 03/25/1986 Inventor: Zeidler4599489, Solid state key for controlling access to computer software Issued on: 07/08/1986 Inventor: Cargile4720860, Method and apparatus for positively identifying an individual Issued on: 01/19/1988 Inventor: Weiss4731841, Field initialized authentication system for protective security of electronic information networks Issued on: 03/15/1988 Inventor: Rosen , et al.4802216, Interrogator and transponder test equipment Issued on: 01/31/1989 Inventor: Irwin , et al.4819267, Solid state key for controlling access to computer systems and to computer software and/or for secure communications Issued on: 04/04/1989 Inventor: Cargile , et al.4856062, Computing and indicating device Issued on: 08/08/1989 Inventor: Weiss4885778, Method and apparatus for synchronizing generation of separate, free running, time dependent equipment Issued on: 12/05/1989 Inventor: Weiss4890323, Data communication systems and methods Issued on: 12/26/1989 Inventor: Beker, et al.4907270Method for certifying the authenticity of a datum exchanged between two devices connected locally or remotely by a transmission line Issued on: 03/06/1990 Inventor: Hazard International ClassH04K 001/00 |
