The device is oriented to the cardinal points using the compass. Then the magnet is adjusted in proximity to the compass assembly until the magnet counterbalances the magnetosphere of the earth. This leaves the compass needle facing east or west. When the magnetosphere of earth weakens prior to a major seismic event, the compass needle will point to the south on a graduated scale on the dial, indicating an imminent quake of large magnitude. | |
