1-Phenyl-3-carboxyamidopyrrolidones of the formula ##STR1## in which R1 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, phenyl, halophenyl, benzyl, halobenzyl, or alkyl substituted with alkoxy, alkyltyhio, phenyl, hydroxy or cyano; and R2 is H or alkyl; or R1 and R2 are combined as alkylene or alkyleneoxyalkylene; R3 is alkyl or alkenyl; R4 is H, halogen, CH3, CF3, CF2 CHF2, OCF2 CHF2, OCHF2, OCF3, SCH3, S(O)CH3, SO2 CH3, methoxyiminomethyl, methoxyimino-1-ethyl, benzyloxyiminomethyl, or benzyloxyimino-1-ethyl;n is zero or 1; X is H or halogen; Y is O or S; and Z is O or S, are useful as herbicidal agents.
