The engagement is determined not only in response to an engaging signal of the lockup clutch from the computer, but also in consideration of a time lag after the engaging signal is turned ON. Alternatively, engagement is determined by detecting the rotary speeds of the engine and the turbine of the torque converter when the engaging signal is ON. As a result, mistaken determinations of engagement of the lockup clutch are avoided. | |
