AbstractIn one exemplary embodiment, an audio/telephone communication system for verbally handicapped individuals is disclosed that comprises a programmed computer, and a matrix of touch-sensitive contacts carrying an overlay removably attached thereto and symbolically displaying for sensory perception and random selection by an operator each of a plurality of message commands associated with a preselected and prerecorded vocabulary of spoken messages, and in response to the operator selection the contact matrix generating data signals identifying the selected messages and control commands for application to the computer. An expansion memory is interconnected to the computer and has stored therein the preselected command data and digital message data representative of the message vocabulary. A digital to analog converter is provided that receives and responds to the digital message data retrieved by the computer from the memory for regenerating the selected audio messages and applying the regenerated messages to a speaker. An interface circuit establishes direct interconnection between the digital to analog converter and the speaker, and further establishes communication between the computer, the digital to analog converter and a telephone line for interconnecting the system to the telephone line in response to a plurality of computer generated signals. | InventorAssigneeApplicationNo. 06/849692 filed on 04/09/1986US Classes:704/271, Handicap aid379/47, Plural alarms over single line379/51, With automatic dialing or transmission of recorded audio message379/52, INCLUDING AID FOR HANDICAPPED USER (E.G., VISUAL, TACTILE, HEARING AID COUPLING)379/88.28, Solid state memory storage379/93.19, Having pressure or position sensitive surface (e.g., touch-screen, light pen)704/258, Synthesis704/260, Image to speech704/270, Application704/274Warning/alarm systemExaminersPrimary: Kemeny, Emanuel S.Attorney, Agent or FirmUS Patent References4189779, Parameter interpolator for speech synthesis circuitIssued on: 02/19/1980 Inventor: Brantingham4215240, Portable voice system for the verbally handicapped Issued on: 07/29/1980 Inventor: Ostrowski4246443, Telephone interface controller for unattended operation Issued on: 01/20/1981 Inventor: Smith4291198, General-purpose electronic telephone station set Issued on: 09/22/1981 Inventor: Anderson , et al.4387269, Electronic apparatus with speech synthesizer Issued on: 06/07/1983 Inventor: Hashimoto , et al.4429367, Speech synthesizer apparatus Issued on: 01/31/1984 Inventor: Ikeda4489438, Audio response system Issued on: 12/18/1984 Inventor: Hughes4503288, Intelligent telephone Issued on: 03/05/1985 Inventor: Kessler4516260Electronic learning aid or game having synthesized speech Issued on: 05/07/1985 Inventor: Breedlove , et al.
