A first vertically traveling elevator holding cards to be shuffled distributes cards one at a time in sequence to the mixing pockets in accordance with a first distribution schedule. A second vertically traveling elevator on the opposite side of the mixing pockets from the first elevator picks up all of the cards from each mixing pocket one mixing pocket at a time in sequence according to a second distribution schedule.
