Felix Hoffmann, a German chemist, was searching for something to relieve his father's arthritis. In doing so, he "rediscovered" acetylsalicylic acid and in 1900, patented a stable process for developing it. Hence, we have aspirin.

AbstractThis invention provides an automated single pass dialysate supply apparatus and a method for conducting hemodialysis treatments when the apparatus is used. The apparatus is of the closed circuit type and provides a pair of cylinders, each equipped with a hydraulically driven diaphragm, which supply fresh dialysate to and remove spent dialysate from an artificial kidney on an alternating time basis; the improvement resides in the means which sense the difference in time of arrival of the end of stroke of each diaphragm and automatically counteract these differences to either maintain or restore synchronization of the instant of end of stroke of each diaphragm in each half cycle of operation. The hemodialysis treatment method permits operator presetting of the desired ultrafiltrate removal rate and insures maintenance of that preset rate throughout the hemodialysis treatment period. | InventorsAssigneeApplicationNo. 06/203075 filed on 10/31/1980US Classes:210/647, Maintaining critical concentration(s)210/188, WITH GAS SEPARATOR210/321.65, Permeated liquid quantity measurement or control210/321.8, All cylindrical membranes are parallel210/87, Responsive to fluid flow210/929, HEMOULTRAFILTRATE VOLUME MEASUREMENT OR CONTROL PROCESSES210/96.2With membraneField of Search210/85, WITH ALARM, INDICATOR, REGISTER, RECORDER, SIGNAL OR INSPECTION MEANS210/87, Responsive to fluid flow210/96.2, With membrane210/416.1, With pump, gas pressure, or suction source210/647, Maintaining critical concentration(s)210/188WITH GAS SEPARATORExaminersPrimary: Spear, Frank A.
