...that the video game, Pong, was invented by a guy who graduated at the bottom of his engineering class? Nolan Bushnell spent more time running the games at a local amusement park than he did on his studies at the University of Utah. His dreams of working for Disney's amusement empire were dashed when the company wouldn't hire him. Taking a boring job, Nolan daydreamed about electronic versions of popular games. He invented Pong, the first video game, and went on to found Atari Co.

Rapid fire howitzer An advanced lightweight towed artillery weapon system embodying an expendable breech gun provided with a fire-out-of-battery (FOOB) recoil system which utilizes a unique constant force, zone-controlled liquid recoil spring. To facilitate rapid fire, two l... | 08/07/1990
Safety device for automatic firearms A safety device for an automatic weapon such as a submachine gun, comprises a safety catch in addition to the sear. The safety catch is mounted for limited longitudinal movement and for vertical swinging movement on the weapon. A spring urges it continuou... | 03/15/1988
Recoil force correction for elevation in automatic weapons employing soft recoil A throttling valve develops a pressure to bring recoiling parts of a weapon to rest with a constant force. Counter-recoil is provided from recuperator pressure. The throttling valve is biased with a force proportional to the sine of the gun elevational an... | 10/12/1982
Floating machine cannon An improved floating machine cannon of the type utilizing the counter-recoil method of firing is disclosed wherein two normally open switches are used to detect when the breech block locks in place and when the recoil damper reaches the optimum point in i... | 05/01/1979
Method and apparatus for controlling and utilizing recoil A method and apparatus for controlling the runout and initial recoil velocity of an artillery piece is disclosed in which variables of barrel elevation and the impulse delivered by a round of ammunition are hydraulically sensed as pressures trapped in act... | 05/09/1978
Lightweight small craft gun system An automatic gun firing expendable breechcase ammunition having a receiver eciprocably mounted in a trunion-mounted, slide assembly and having the barrel fixed thereto to comprise the recoiling mass. Two pairs of trifurcated members are disposed within the... | 04/18/1978
Recoilable gun tube latch This invention relates to new and improved methods and modular apparatus automatically latching, unlatching and resetting of the latch mechanism of gun tubes of weapon systems of the "soft recoil" type having recoil and counterrecoil functions or cycles... | 08/23/1977
Zone setting assembly with temperature compensator for weapon systems of the "soft recoil" type "Soft Recoil" type weapon systems automatically fire from out of battery positions, i.e., while moving in the counterrecoil direction of conventional recoil weapon systems, in response to the zone setting of a velocity sensor firing pin actuator. The pres... | 07/05/1977
Energy absorbing device and detent for constant recoil slide A clamp and wedge attachment to fixed and moving components frictionally ages the components which become disengageable upon application of overriding forces. The wedge has an enlarged detachable loading end which fits between two tines of the clamp whic... | 05/24/1977
Automatic or semi-automatic firearm A stable automatic or semi-automatic firearm having a differential recoil system in which an open bolt has a designed mass and closing velocity to impact and drive a reciprocating barrel forwardly without rebound and remain locked to the barrel during the... | 04/26/1977
Shock absorber for firearms and the like A shock absorber for automatic weapons of the kind where all the shots in a burst with the exception of the first are fired during the return movement to the initial position of the weapon. The weapon has a recoil member movable with respect to a fixed me... | 04/12/1977
Constant recoil system A mounting system for heavy caliber rapid firing weapons has a sensor ressive to gun motion during recoil. The sensor provides an electrical signal used to adjust the rate of gunfire so that counter-recoil movement of the gun upon firing each round is su... | 01/25/1977
Gun self powered drive system A gun drive system is provided wherein recoil motion is used to pump hydraulic liquid into an accumulator, which in turn, on demand, drives a hydraulic motor and the thereto coupled gun, discharging into a low pressure reservoir, which in turn, resupplies... | 11/16/1976
