...that the inventor of the electric motor was a blacksmith named Thomas Davenport? Described as "a brilliantly unsuccessful inventor", Davenport invented the first rotary electric motor. In 1836 he headed out -- on foot -- from his Vermont home to file a patent application at the Patent Office in Washington, D.C. By the time he got there, he had squandered away his money and couldn't afford the $30 filing fee so he turned around and went home. When he later mailed in his application with money he'd raised, the Patent office was destroyed in a fire. He did finally get credit for his invention on Feb. 5, 1837.

Rediation detector system for locating and identifying special nuclear material in moving vehicles The invention uses a series of combined passive neutron and gamma ray sensors systematically placed along a path of commercial traffic, for example an airport runway, combined with a pulsed source of low energy protons and deuterons. The pulsed source produces monoe... | 02/07/2012
System for measuring burn-out of fuel elements of a high-temperature reactor The burnout of a fuel element in a reactor is determined by first transferring a fuel element from a reactor to a measuring position and then subjecting the transferred fuel element at the position to a neutron flux. A first detector measures the total γ radiation ... | 03/25/2008
Radiation detection system for portable gamma-ray spectroscopy A portable gamma ray detection apparatus having a gamma ray detector encapsulated by a compact isolation structure having at least two volumetrically-nested enclosures where at least one is a thermal shield. The enclosures are suspension-mounted to each other to suc... | 06/20/2006
Method and system for identifying the source of a signal A method for determining which of a plurality of detectors transmitted a signal, such as a signal related to neutron or gamma emissions, includes connecting each of the detectors to a single cable, such as an environmentally rugged cable. Signals are tran... | 07/22/2003
Low-energy particle sensor A low-energy particle sensor includes current collection areas which take the form of diodes partially covering the substrate. In detection areas defined alongside the collection areas the small thickness of the material enables low-energy particles (in p... | 11/12/2002
Apparatuses and methods for detecting, identifying and quantitating radioactive nuclei and methods of distinguishing neutron stimulation of a radiation particle detector from gamma-ray stimulation of a detector In one aspect, the invention encompasses a method of detecting radioactive decay, comprising: a) providing a sample comprising a radioactive material, the radioactive material generating decay particles; b)providing a plurality of detectors proximate the ... | 07/03/2001
Method and system for obtaining x-ray single photon spectroscopic data using room-temperature solid state detectors by measuring the induced electron current A method and a system for obtaining spectroscopic data of a single photon of a given energy that undergoes an interaction, beginning at a given point in time, with a room-temperature solid state detector of a given thickness and fitted with two electrodes... | 08/10/1999
Semiconductor particle-detector A particle-detector is formed on a die of semiconductor material (20) comprising: first and second layers (22, 23) with a first type of conductivity (N), a third layer (21) with a second type of conductivity (P), interposed between the first and second la... | 12/29/1998
| 5629525 | Plutonium assaying A method determining the plutonium content of a material containing fluorine involves obtaining the mass ratio of plutonium in a compound comprising plutonium and fluorine, particularly plutonium tetrafluoride, to the total plutonium content.
