He was in luck because his colleague, Spencer Silver, accidentally developed a glue that was too weak for other purposes. After initially discouraging consumer response, Post-it Notes became a hit in 1979.

Variable tape speed for video recorders A speed control for varying the video tape speed which is adapted for use with the video tape recorder having a power supply providing a power signal and a capstan motor for driving the video tape in forward and reverse directions. The speed control inclu... | 10/13/1981
Apparatus for controlling and stopping a transport mechanism at a predetermined cue point Apparatus is disclosed for issuing commands for controlling the operation of a transport mechanism preferably of the type which transports a recording medium such as a magnetic tape for the purpose of stopping at a predetermined cue point location on the ... | 05/12/1981
Continuous speed control system for video tape recorder A control system is provided which is capable of controlling the speed of a video tape recorder in a continuously variable manner, even though the video tape recorder is designed to operate at discrete speeds. The variable speed control is achieved withou... | 04/07/1981
Method and apparatus for controlling the movement of a recording medium A recording medium transport control precisely controls the movement of a recording medium such as magnetic tape at a desired velocity. A pulse drive control adapted for manipulation provides drive pulses to the transport. Each drive pulse is of a variabl... | 09/23/1980
Isolator circuit for use with frequency sensitive switching circuit An isolator circuit for use with a switching circuit for energizing a ballasted load in response to a control signal of preselected frequency superimposed on AC power circuits which supply the load. In the switching circuit, a triac is gated to conduct th... | 02/26/1980
Continuous slow motion automatic tracking system A method and apparatus is disclosed for automatically maintaining a transducing head on the proper track and is particularly adapted for a helical scan recording and reproducing apparatus that is capable of providing special motion effects, such as slow, ... | 08/07/1979
Tape control apparatus Apparatus for controlling the speed, direction and tension of tape transported between a supply reel and a take-up reel. First and second drive motors are coupled to the supply and take-up reels for applying oppositely directed torques thereto, thereby bi... | 07/03/1979
Motor control circuit for tape drive unit A tape drive for moving a tape with a prerecorded clock track past a transducer at a constant velocity. An output signal from a speed servo circuit controls the energization, and hence the speed, of a tape driving motor. It responds to a tape speed signal... | 05/22/1979
Variable ratio magnetic tape drive using a variable belt thickness A variable ratio drive employs an elastic extensible control belt which changes its cross-section in relation to induced changes in its length, according to Poisson's ratio. The control belt is introduced between a pulley and a drive belt, and a mechanism... | 08/15/1978
