...Chester Carlson was a patent agent who tired of having to make multiple copies of patent applications using the only duplication method available at the time: carbon paper. In 1959 he came up with a new copying system and took it to IBM for evaluation. The "experts" at IBM determined potential sales to be only 5,000 units because people wouldn't want to use a bulky machine when they had carbon paper. Carlson's invention was the xerography process, the company founded on the system is Xerox.

Sound absorbing structure A plurality of parallel and laterally spaced impermeable walls define an array of side-by-side elongate fluid filled cavities. Adjacent open ends of the cavities provide a sound-receiving or admittance end for the sound waves into the cavities. An acousti... | 01/06/1981
Flexible drive coupling A flexible drive coupling for innerconnecting a pair of rotatable shafts includes a hub and an outer member. The outer member has formed in it a central opening and is disposed so as to circumscribe the hub and to be generally concentric with the central ... | 03/25/1980
Sound absorbing structure A plurality of parallel and laterally spaced impermeable walls define an array of side-by-side elongate fluid filled cavities. Adjacent open ends of the cavities provide a sound-receiving or admittance end for the sound waves into the cavities. An acousti... | 02/27/1979
Rotor blade retention system A rotor blade retention system connects an elongated rotor blade to a rotor hub that is rotatable about its central axis. The connected rotor blade normally extends generally radially from the hub and is rotatable with the hub. The retention system includ... | 01/23/1979
Flexible sealing joint A flexible joint assembly for interconnecting two conduits that transport fluid under pressure includes an annular housing and a tubular member of smaller diameter than the housing. The housing has adjacent each end an annular flange that extends radially... | 10/24/1978
Muffler A muffler incorporates a tubular shell that has an acoustically reflective interior circumferential surface. In successive sections taken transversely through the shell, the acoustically reflective surface has at least a portion of its circumference shape... | 08/29/1978
Frustroconical laminated bearing A laminated bearing comprises a plurality of alternating and bonded together layers of elastomeric material and substantially nonextensible material. Each of the layers is a frustroconically shaped annulus that has a pair of frustroconically shaped side s... | 08/22/1978
Drive coupling A drive coupling for interconnecting a pair of rotatable shafts includes a rigid spider that has four coplanar arms. Adjacent arms of the spider are oriented generally perpendicular to each other. A rigid element is disposed between each pair of adjacent ... | 09/27/1977
Vibration attenuating support for rotating member A noise and vibration attenuating support mounts a rotating member that tends to tilt about and translate along axes transverse to its axis of rotation. The support incorporates a body having mass and a moment of inertia with respect to an axis through th... | 09/06/1977
Rotor blade retention system A rotor blade retention system connects an elongated rotor blade to a rotor hub that is rotatable about its central axis. The connected rotor blade normally extends generally radially from the hub and is rotatable with the hub. The retention system includ... | 06/07/1977
Propeller assembly A propeller assembly comprises a rotatable drive shaft and two separate blade subassemblies resiliently coupled to and driven by the shaft. Each blade subassembly has a pair of interconnected propeller blades extending in opposite directions radially of t... | 12/28/1976
Silencer for a fan-cooled electric motor An electric motor has a motor housing and a fan at one end of the housing driven by the motor. The motor also has structure for directing air exhausted from the fan along the length of the motor housing to cool the motor. A silencer for the motor comprise... | 09/14/1976
Hinge A hinge comprises a first and a second bracket that are at least partially spaced apart. A viscoelastic member is disposed between and secured to the brackets to permit relative rotation between them about an axis that passes through both brackets and the... | 08/24/1976
