...that one person who claimed to be the inventor of the television is Russian emigre Vladimir Zworykin? In 1929 David Sarnoff, founder of RCA, asked Zworykin what it would take to develop TV for commercial use. He said: a year and a half and $100,000. In reality, it took 20 years and $50 million! Before his death in 1982 at the age of 92, Zworykin said of his invention: "The technique is wonderful. It is beyond my expectations. But the programs! I would never let my children even come close to this thing."

Directional steering and navigation indicator A navigation and guidance system which directs a user toward a desired destination. Position and steering information are integrated into a single display to allow the user to immediately determine whether the correct course is being traveled, and to info... | 01/07/1997
Apparatus and method for mounting and stabilizing a hybrid focal plane array A hybrid focal plane array (FPA) structure including a Balanced Composite Structure (BCS) in which several layers of materials having differing thermal expansion coefficients stabilize the FPA during cryogenic cooling. An optical substrate with a layer of... | 12/17/1996
Position estimation using satellite range rate measurements A method for using a value of range rate observed by a receiver, such as a GPS receiver, to determine the coordinates of points on the surface of the earth from which this value of range rate would be observed. These coordinates are given in an earth-cent... | 09/03/1996
Compensated hybrid A hybrid circuit for coupling a modem to an external telephone line substantially compensates for and thereby cancels reflected echo. The hybrid includes a transformer coupled between the telephone line and the modem transceiver, which includes a transmit... | 07/30/1996
Micromachined rate sensor comb drive device and method A micromachined rate sensor system includes plural sensing proof masses or plates coupled to multiple electrostatic combs. A comb drive amplifier induces a deflection of the sense plates along a plane defined by the configuration of the sense plates, such... | 06/25/1996
Automotive occupant sensing device A vehicle occupant safety system includes an image sensor and processor that provides a classification of the occupancy status of the passenger seat area to determine whether an airbag should be deployed. The image processing system includes a photodetect... | 06/18/1996
