...that Charles Goodyear performed some of his experiments on rubber while in debtor's prison? He was there so often he referred to it as his "hotel". Chronically in debt because of poor business sense and ill health, Goodyear depended on the generosity of friends and family. Even after he unlocked the secret to vulcanizing rubber, he was unable to improve his financial situation. When he died, his estate was $200,000 in debt.

8040810Method for routing packets in wireless ad-hoc networks with probabilistic delay guarantees
A method determines an optimal route to deliver a packet from a source node via relay nodes to a destination node in a network. A graph of nodes connected by edges represents possible routes in the network. A probability that the packet arrives at the destination be...

7620204Method for tracking objects in videos using covariance matrices
A method is provided for tracking a non-rigid object in a sequence of frames of a video. Features of an object are extracted from the video. The features include locations of pixels and properties of the pixels. The features are used to construct a covariance matrix...

7477800Method for retargeting images
A method for content-aware image retargeting generates an energy image from a source image according to an energy function. From the energy image, one or more seams are determined according to a minimizing function such that each seam has a minimal energy. Each seam...

7443925Pilot and data signals for MIMO systems using channel statistics
A method generates signals in a transmitter of a multiple-input, multiple-output wireless communications system. The transmitter includes Nt transmit antennas. A transmit covariance matrix Rt determined using statistical state information of a ...

7436909Method for estimating time of arrival of received signals for ultra wide band impulse radio systems
A method estimates a time of arrival of a signal received in a wireless communication system. An energy in a frame of a received signal is measured to determine a block in the frame, the block representing a coarse time of arrival of the received signal. Multiple ti...

7391807Video transcoding of scalable multi-layer videos to single layer video
A method transcodes a compressed multi-layer video bitstream that includes a base layer bitstream and an enhancement layer bitstream. The base and enhancement layers are first partially decoded, and then the partially decoded signals are combined with a motion compe...

7388927M-ary modulation of signals for coherent and differentially coherent receivers
A system incorporates time-hopped impulse-radio (TH-IR), transmitted-reference impulse-radio (TR-IR) and noncoherent transceivers in the same wireless network. A transmitter modulates a sequence of bits in a wireless communications network by selecting one coding se...

7359550Incremental singular value decomposition of incomplete data
A method models data values acquired by measuring a natural phenomena. Samples are acquired of the natural phenomena, each sample is arranged as a vector c of the data values. Some of the data values may be missing. The vectors c are decomposed into five matrices, r...

7154956OFDM receiver for detecting FSK modulated signals
An OFDM receiver detects FSK symbols in a communications network. An FFT has an input connected to receive temporal samples of a received, frequency-hopped FSK signal. Outputs of the FFT represent the FSK signal in a frequency domain. The outputs are grouped accordi...

7019748Simulating motion of static objects in scenes
A computer implemented method stimulates motion of a static 3D physical object in a static scene by first acquiring a 3D graphics model of the 3D physical object and the scene. A projector is registered with the 3D physical object, the scene and the 3D model. The mo...

6353677Rendering objects having multiple volumes and embedded geometries using minimal depth information
A method renders an object including multiple volumes and polygons. The method casts a ray through the object for each pixel of an image. Each rays is partitioned into segments according to surfaces of each volume. Color and opacity values are accumulated...
